PHOTO, POETRY AND ILLUSTRATED ESSAY COMPETITIONS – 2015
OPEN PHOTO COMPETITION
Entries in single image or montage/collage format should represent the Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty Story in terms of places, people, objects & images and events of relevance and should be “Titled”. Historical images from other sources may be included in montages/collages but the main image content must be the original work of the entrant.
Rules of the Open Photo Competition:
- The competition is open to anyone aged 16 or over (Closing Date 5.00.p.m. Fri Oct 16th 2015).
- One submission per entrant please
- All entries must be submitted in medium or high res JPeg format to [email protected]
- All entries must be accompanied by a completed Entry Form – these are available on request from [email protected].
- All entries will be independently assessed and a shortlist will be selected which will be exhibited as part of the 2015 Memorial Programme. From this short list, one winner will be selected and the winner will receive a framed scroll and a modest cash prize at a special Memorial Weekend Ceremony on Friday October 30th 2015.
- The adjudicators’ decision is final in all matters pertaining to this competition and no correspondence will be entered into regarding individual entries.
- Entries remain the property of the Entrant, however, by entering this competition, the Entrant gives the competition organisers the right to publish & print your entry in any related promotional material and on the Hugh O’Flaherty website

SECONDARY SCHOOL POETRY COMPETITION
In 1994, poet Brendan Kennelly penned Hugh O’Flaherty’s Trees a poem to mark the planting of a Grove of Italian / Mediterranean Trees in Muckross Arboretum to commemorate the Monsignor.
The Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society now invites you to compose a poem on the theme of the Monsignor’s work and his legacy.
Rules of the Competition:
- The competition is open to all current 2nd Level Students
- The closing date of the competition is 5.00.p.m. Friday October 16th 2015.
- One Poem per entrant please.
- Entries will not be returned, so please keep a copy.
- Alterations cannot be made to Poems once entered.
- The adjudicators’ decision is final in all matters pertaining to this competition and no correspondence will be entered into regarding individual entries.
- All poems must have a title and must not exceed 30 lines in length (excluding title).
- Poems must be the original work of the entrant.
- Entries must not have been published, self-published, published on a website or broadcast before being submitted for this competition.
- Entries should be typed in black font and can be double or single spaced.
- All entries must be accompanied by a completed Entry Form – these are available on request from [email protected] .
- Entries accompanied by the completed Entry Forms should be sent to [email protected]
- The winning Poem will be selected from a shortlist and will be announced on Friday October 30th at a special Memorial Weekend ceremony at which the winner will be invited to read the winning poem. The winner will receive a framed scroll and a modest cash prize.

Entrants are invited to write a short essay which can include a relevant illustration, on why Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty is considered a Hero.
Rules of the competition:
- This Essay competition is confined to Primary Level School Students – 5th / 6th Classes.
- Only one Essay per entrant please
- Essays must not exceed two pages if handwritten or one page if typed – maximum 200 words.
- Handwritten entries should be in clear legible writing, preferably in black ink. Typed entries should be typed and printed in black ink on A4 paper. Entries can be double or single spaced: NB: No double-sided entries please.
- Please ensure you keep a copy of your essay as essays will not be returned. All hard copies will be shredded following the competition.
- Alterations cannot be made to Essays once entered.
- Each essay submitted must be the original, unpublished work, written unaided by each entrant.
- All entries must be accompanied by a completed Entry Form – these are available on request from [email protected].
- Your school and teacher’s names should be included on the Entry Form.
- The adjudicators’ decision is final in all matters pertaining to this competition and no correspondence will be entered into regarding individual entries.
- Closing date for receipt of entries is 5.00.p.m. Friday October 16th 2015.
- The winning essay will be selected from a shortlist and will be announced on Friday October 30th 2015 at a special Memorial Weekend ceremony. The winner will receive a framed scroll and a modest cash prize.
